Recognized for reaching 4,000 hours of volunteer service
Coaldale, PA (06/01/2009) – St. Lukes Miners Memorial Hospital volunteer, Emerson Musser recently received the President's Call to Service Award for reaching 4,000 hours of volunteer service over a lifetime in 2008.
Musser volunteers in the Pharmacy Department at St. Lukes Miners Memorial Hospital. Melissa Hartman, Pharmacy Manager, says, “Emerson is invaluable to us. His primary responsibility is to make deliveries for us. He does the legwork in getting the medications to the floors which allows my staff to remain in the department to prepare medications for the patients. I am so pleased that he has reached the 4,000 hour milestone in his volunteer hours and is being recognized for his contributions.”
Driven to Help Other People
“Once I got involved, I made a commitment. I'm from the old school and when I make a commitment I stick with it as long as I can. That's how I came to volunteer so long. The most important reason to volunteer is to get up and go, to get out and see and help other people. It really keeps me going,” shared Emerson Musser as he mingled with hospital administration and staff at the reception they held Thursday in his honor.
Micah Gursky, Director of Development, St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital, adds, “St. Luke's is very patient oriented facility and our volunteers allow us to have more interaction with our patients and visitors. When a patient or their family interacts with a volunteer in the hospital, I think it helps to put them at ease in what may be a stressful situation. Emerson is a shining example of the volunteers we are fortunate to have at St. Luke's. He is well known in the community which also helps people connect with him. We're fortunate to have a volunteer who is so committed to giving back and helping people.”
