Bethlehem, PA (11/9/2009) - The Northampton County Medical Society Alliance donated $10,000 to the Bethlehem Partnership for a Healthy Community at its annual breakfast meeting on November 6. More than 200 people attended the breakfast where Bethlehem Partnership Director and St. Luke's Hospital Director of Community Health, Bonnie Coyle, MD, provided highlights and accomplishments of the Partnership's programs, taking time to thank supporters and contributors during the presentation.

Funds will be Used to Purchase Laptops

The funds donated by Northampton County Medical Society Alliance will be used to purchase 10 laptops to enhance after-school programs and homework clubs throughout the Bethlehem Area School District. The laptops will allow students to gain critical computer skills, while providing a fun, interactive way for the children to improve their skills and reading levels.

"We are very grateful to the Alliance for this significant donation," stated Dr. Coyle. "These laptops will be used in programs that directly benefit students, like our Reading Rocks! literacy program at Donegan Elementary School."

A significant advantage of using laptops is the portability, which will allow the Partnership to share the computers with many schools, particularly those that are Title I or have ASPIRE programs.

First Recipient of New HELP Awards

"We are pleased to announce that the Bethlehem Partnership is the first recipient of our new HELP awards (Health Education & Literacy Programs)," said Virginia Oskin, co-president of the Northampton County Medical Society Alliance. "This program is a perfect fit with our mission."

An organization of physicians and physician's spouses, the Northampton County Medical Society Alliance seeks to address health concerns in the community through philanthropy, scholarships and promoting health-related endeavors. For more information, visit ncmsa.org
