Successfully treating cancer is our life's work

Cancer is a disease that happens when abnormal cells in the body split and grow out of control. Healthy cells grow, split, and then die. Cancer cells keep growing and make new abnormal cells that can move to other parts of the body. Cancer can be inherited, or caused by lifestyle or environmental factors and can affect people of any age, race or sex. In fact, the American Cancer Society estimates that half of the men and one-third of the women in the United States will develop cancer during their lifetimes.

More people are successfully being treated for cancer now than at any other time in history, because of early detection, breakthroughs in treatment and technology and dedicated health care professionals whose life's work is fighting cancer. This is especially true at

St. Luke’s Women’s Cancer Counselor

Susan Toohey, MEd, MA

For women with breast, ovarian, uterine or cervical cancers, the St. Luke’s Woman’s Cancer Counselor is ready to offer emotional support during diagnosis and treatment and serve as a patient/family resource throughout the continuum of care. The St. Luke’s Woman’s Cancer Counselor:

  • Serves as an advocate for patients
  • Provides counseling support to patients and family members
  • Helps during diagnosis and treatment
  • Facilitates the St. Luke’s Active Pink Support Group for women with breast cancer
  • Makes links to services and community agencies, including transportation as available
  • Helps with the completion of disability and other insurance forms, as needed
