St. Luke’s lung cancer and cancer patients find hope through an outstanding thoracic care team led by a fellowship-trained surgeon. This thoracic care team offers the very latest treatments available.
St. Luke’s Thoracic Tumor Board provides an organized forum for our thoracic cancer specialists to develop a complete treatment plans for each patient. This team approach to thoracic tumor treatment has become very important as more treatment options become available.
Promising New Clinical Trials for Lung/Thoracic Cancer
When it is unlikely that standard treatments will benefit patients, they are offered promising new treatments through clinical trials. More than 100 clinical trials currently are under way at St. Luke's Cancer Center. Studies for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of thoracic cancers are available. And through St. Luke’s affiliation with the University of Pennsylvania Cancer Network, lung cancer patients have access to a number of lung and esophageal cancer clinical trials.

William R. Burfeind, Jr., MD, Thoracic Surgeon
Dr. Burfeind is a native of the Lehigh Valley and a graduate of Emmaus High School. He returned in 2007 to lead the Lung Cancer Program and Thoracic Surgery at St. Luke's Health Network.
In addition, Dr. Burfeind:
- Received his undergraduate degree from Middlebury College and his medical degree from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons
- Completed his general surgery and thoracic surgery training at Duke University Medical Center
- Acted as Assistant Professor of Surgery at Duke from 2004 through 2007
- Board certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery
- Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Chest Physicians
- Member of the Society of Thoracic Surgery, the Association of Academic Surgeons and the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association
- Speaks nationally on such topics as thoracoscopic (VATS) lobectomy and complex airway reconstruction
Clinical interests include the treatment of both lung and esophageal cancers and chest tumors. Research interests include large clinical trials, minimally invasive therapies for lung cancer, lung cancer staging and quality of life after lung cancer treatment.

Special interests include esophageal cancer, surgical treatment of complex lung tumors, minimally invasive thoracic surgery (including transcervical thymectomy, thorascopic lobectomy, sympathectomy) and endobronchial ultrasound and stenting.
