Vertebroplasty Strengthens Bones

Vertebroplasty is a procedure that is used to strengthen a broken spinal bone that has been weakened by osteoporosis or other conditions. The procedure, which is accomplished by injecting an orthopedic cement into the fractured bone, is image-guided and minimally-invasive.

When is Vertebroplasty used and for what conditions?

Vertebroplasty has been successfully used to treat men and women who have suffered from conditions that lead to bone compression fractures, such as osteoporosis. The procedure involves injecting the orthopedic cement in to the porous bones, thereby filling the spaces and strengthening the bones to prevent future fractures. Typically, this procedure is used only after simple treatments such as bed rest, braces and medications become ineffective or lead to other problems.

While this generally is a safe and effective procedure, there are benefits and risks to consider. Consult your doctor or call 610-954-4805 for more information.
