Digestive Disorders Surgery at St. Luke’s

Appendectomy – Laparoscopic – A surgeon makes several tiny cuts in the abdomen and inserts a miniature camera and surgical instruments. The camera guides the surgeon, while the instruments allow the surgeon to remove the appendix.

Bowel Resection – Laparoscopic – A procedure during which a diseased part of the large intestine is removed. A laparoscopic bowel resection is performed with the aid of a small camera and instruments placed in the abdomen.

Laparoscopic Sigmoid Colon Resection for Benign Diverticular Disease – Removal of part of the colon that suffers from diverticular disease. Diverticular disease can be small pouches in the colon that bulge through weak spots in the colon (diverticulosis), or infection or inflammation of these pouches (diverticulitis).

Laparoscopic Left Hemicolectomy for Cancer – Removal of the left portion of the colon because of cancer. A laparoscopic hemicolectomy is performed with the aid of a small camera and instruments placed in the abdomen.

Laparoscopic Right Hemicolectomy for Cancer and Benign Disease – Removal of the right portion of the colon because of cancer and benign disease. A laparoscopic hemicolectomy is performed with the aid of a small camera and instruments placed in the abdomen.

Laparoscopic Hand Assist Total Proctocolectomy with Ileal Pouch – A proctocolectomy is a procedure to remove the colon and rectum for patients with ulcerative colitis. The surgeon forms the small intestine into a pouch and attaches it to the anus to maintain the digestive tract. This pouch (called an ileoanal pouch) becomes the digestive tract’s waste reservoir. A laparoscopic proctocolectomy is performed with the aid of a small camera and instruments placed in the abdomen.

Anastomosis for Chronic Ulcerative Colitis – A surgical connection made between loops of intestine after part of the colon containing a chronic inflammation is removed.

Laparoscopic Han Assist Right Hemicolectomy – Removal of the right portion of the colon. A laparoscopic hemicolectomy is performed with the aid of a small camera and instruments placed in the abdomen.

PPH Stapled Hemorrhoidectomy – Surgery to remove hemorrhoids. Using a circular stapler, the procedure for prolapse and hemorrhoids (PPH) repositions anal canal tissue and reduces blood flow to the hemorrhoids, causing them to shrink.

Trans-Anal Endoscopic Microsurgery – A procedure to remove rectal lesions using endoscopes, which are small, lighted instruments that contain cameras.
