Conditions Treated at The Vascular Center

Vascular disease mainly affects the arteries of the heart, brain and legs. The four main types of vascular diseases are:

  • Cardiovascular Disease (affecting blood flow to the heart)
  • Cerebrovascular Disease (affecting blood flow to the brain)
  • Peripheral Arterial Disease (affecting the arteries outside the heart and brain)
  • Venous Disease (affecting the veins throughout the body)

What is an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and how is it treated?

Abdominal aortic aneurysm, commonly referred to as AAA, is a weak spot in the aorta, or main artery that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body. The weakness, or aneurysm, makes the aorta vulnerable to rupturing and spilling large amounts of blood into the abdominal cavity. Most often, aneurysms do not produce any symptoms and occur in people over age 65. It is more common among men and smokers. Endovascular stent graft aortic aneurysm repair is a minimally invasive procedure for AAA.

What is Carotid Artery Disease and how is it treated?

The carotid arteries branch off from the aorta up the neck and lead to the head and the brain. This disease is the result of a build-up of plaque, or fatty deposits, in the carotid arteries that deliver oxygen-rich blood to the head and brain. Clogged carotid arteries can result in stroke. A transient ischemic attack, or TIA, may result. TIAs cause brief neurologic dysfunction such as slurred speech, temporary blindness or weakness on one side of the body. These are early warning signs of a future stroke and may be the first indication of carotid artery disease. Carotid artery stenting and endarterectomy are effective procedures for the treatment of carotid artery disease.
