Trauma Team

Expert Trauma Care

Dr. Michael Grossman (l)

a team of expert doctors
who specialize in caring
for traumatic injuries.

All patients admitted to St. Luke's Hospital after suffering a traumatic injury are cared for by a multidisciplinary team of doctors and nurses. The team is led by a doctor who is a fellowship-trained trauma surgeon, board-certified by the American College of  Surgeons in both surgery and surgical critical care. It is his responsibility to coordinate all of the patient's care, all communication with the patient's family and all communication among the patient's primary care physician and specialists and work directly with the trauma practitioner, an advanced practice registered nurse with specialized training in trauma care.  The team includes:

Anesthesiologists - Physicians who provide anesthesia.

Neurosurgeons - Surgeons who specialize in injuries of the brain, spinal cord and nerves.

Opthalmologists   - Surgeons who specialize in injuries to the eyes, eyelids and surrounding bones.

Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons - Surgeons who specialize in dental injuries and fractures of the face.

Orthopedic Surgeons - Surgeons who specialize in injuries to the bones, joints, ligaments and tendons.

Otorhinolaryngologists - Physicians who evaluate and treat injuries to the face, ears, nose, sinuses, mouth and throat.

Pediatricians - Physicians who evaluate and treat patients age 18 or younger.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Specialists - Physicians who specialize in areas such as Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech/Language Pathology and Audiology.

Plastic Surgeons - Surgeons who specialize in the complex repairs of injuries to the face and extremities.

Surgical Critical Care Specialists - Physicians who oversee the care of patients in the Intensive Care Unit.

The trauma team also includes specially trained physicians, nurses and technicians from areas throughout the hospital who are proficient in the treatment and care of trauma patients.
