Skilled Care in the Home
Home care allows patients to stay in their homes and be involved in their own care. The staff of the Visiting Nurse Association of St. Luke’s teaches patients and family members the steps needed to help recover from surgery or manage an illness.
Home health services may include:
- Skilled nursing
- Physical therapy
- Occupational therapy
- Speech therapy
- Medical social services
- Home health aide
Skilled care services may include:
- Care after a hospital stay for management of acute illnesses
- Additional care for a chronic illness
- Wound management and management of surgical complications
- Therapy services needed after orthopedic surgery or treatment for a neurologic disorder
- Long-term care of a chronic condition

Paying for home care
Medicare and most other third-party payers cover home care services. Some insurances require that the patient pay deductibles or co-pays. Patients without insurance may qualify for services on a sliding scale basis under the VNA’s Charity Care Policy.
Most insurance plans require that the patient be homebound. This means leaving the home is difficult and absences from the home are primarily to keep medical appointments. Services need to be provided under a plan of treatment established and approved by a physician.
