The St. Luke's Fibroid Center

More about Uterine Fibroids

Learn more about uterine fibroids
in the St. Luke's Health Library.

Uterine fibroids are benign tumors of uterine smooth muscles and are not considered to be precancerous. Their exact cause is currently unknown.

It is estimated that 25 to 50 percent or more of women will eventually develop fibroids. Approximately 10 to 30 percent of these women have symptomatic uterine fibroids. The evidence is twice as common among African-American women.

Fibroids are usually diagnosed during a gynecological internal examination. The presence of fibroids is most often confirmed by an abdominal ultrasound.

Symptoms and Treatment Options

Symptoms of uterine fibroids include heavy menstrual bleeding, painful periods, pelvic pressure, frequent urination, pain during intercourse and lower back pain.

St. Luke's Fibroid Center takes a multidisciplinary approach to treating uterine fibroids and offers a wide range of treatment options as an alternative to hysterectomy.

These options are discussed during your initial consultation at St. Luke's Fibroid Center and include minimally invasive surgical procedures and uterine fibroid embolization (UFE), from physicians specializing in uterine fibroid treatment.

If you are ready to make an appointment or would further consultation on treatment solutions for uterine fibroids, please call St. Luke's Fibroid Center at 1-877-495-SLFC (7532).
