Fellowships Available for Emergency Medicine Residents
Trauma / Critical Care Fellowship
One of the unique attributes of St. Luke's Hospital is the excellent rapport that exists between all of its clinical departments. Nowhere is that rapport better demonstrated than in the relationship between the departments of Emergency Medicine, Trauma, and Critical Care. One byproduct of this relationship was the creation of a Trauma / Critical Care Fellowship several years ago. This one-year fellowship accepts two emergency medicine residents annually and provides advanced training in trauma management and critical care medicine.
Educational experiences are both clinical and academic and include resuscitation of critically ill patients, pharmacology of therapeutic agents used in critical care medicine, technical skills involved in monitoring airway maintenance, mechanical ventilation and bronchoscopy, theory and practical management of invasive and noninvasive monitoring systems, and trauma care of both adult and pediatric patients.
There are daily formal morning faculty rounds on all patients. The fellowship faculty provides both didactic and bedside training and is available on a 24-hor basis. Each fellow is certified as an ATLS Instructor and is an integral part of the training of residents on the trauma and critical care services.
Sports Medicine
The St. Luke's Sport Medicine Fellowship annually accepts two graduates from emergency medicine and other primary care residencies and trains physicians in the art of evaluating and managing clinical issues in sports medicine. The fellow's clinical activities allow for close mentoring and supervision, while providing the opportunity for a great deal of autonomy and independence. The goals of the fellowship are accomplished by providing care to a number of organized athletic programs. Several high school and college sports coverage opportunities are available. Special populations of athletic coverage will include the Special Olympics, the Lehigh Valley ½-Marathon, the Lehigh Valley Marathon, USA Boxing and the Allentown SportsFest Games.
Opportunity also is available to assist in the medical care of other sporting events such as the Pennsylvania Keystone Sports Games, the Philadelphia Triathlon and the United States Cycling Championships. Year-round weekly attendance in each of the assigned training rooms is required.
