Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program

James Anasti, MD

Program Director, St. Luke's Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program

"St. Luke's Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program has been expanded thanks to strong administrative support, an increase in faculty at the generalist and subspecialist levels and an increase in gynecologic and obstetric clinical material. These enhancements further enrich our program and allow more time and resources to be devoted to the residents. This residency program also is distinguished by offering a wealth of experience and a complement of residents at the two hospital locations in Bethlehem and Allentown."

Training in All Aspects of Obstetrics and Gynecology

The Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program at St. Luke’s Hospital is designed to train physicians in all aspects of obstetrics and gynecology including perinatology, reproductive endocrinology, urogynecology, gynecologic oncology and primary and preventative health care for women. The program seeks to develop compassionate and competent Ob/Gyn physicians to serve as consultants in the medical community. Residents in the program train at both the Bethlehem and Allentown campuses of St. Luke’s Hospital. Less than ten miles apart from each other, the campuses offer the residents a wealth of experiences with different populations and needs to enrich their training.

Obstetrics and gynecology always has been a part of St. Luke’s rich 130-year history. The Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program has been in continuous operation training physicians for more than 50 years. However, in the last ten years, under the leadership of our present chairman, Joseph C. L. Merola, MD, program director James N. Anasti, MD, and a supportive Board of Trustees, our department has grown to be recognized as a market leader in women’s and neonatal services in the Lehigh Valley/east central region of Pennsylvania. With more than 4,100 deliveries, St. Luke’s Hospital & Health Network ranks in the top five obstetrics and gynecology teaching programs in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program at St. Luke's recently expanded the allopathic program by increasing the faculty at the generalist and subspecialist levels and augmenting the gynecologic and obstetric clinical material. The broader program has a complement of 20 residents (five per year). The wealth of clinical material and dedication of the generalists and subspecialty faculty prepares our residents for careers in private practice or fellowship training.

Our teaching staff feels that the balance of academics and clinical exposure at St. Luke’s is the basis for our ten-year, first-time pass rate on written boards of over 95 percent. Residents routinely perform more operative vaginal deliveries, vaginal and laparoscopic surgeries than 90 percent of other programs. Technical experience is ample, with our residents reporting case numbers in the 90th percentiles in the country, as well as a significant number of our 4,100 deliveries being complicated.

We welcome you to apply to the St. Luke’s Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program.
