Osteopathic Internal Medicine Residency Program

Gloria Fioravanti, DO,

Program Director, Department of Medicine

“Many applicants are attracted to our program because of the breadth of clinical experiences, the committed, dedicated faculty and the national reputation St. Luke's Hospital & Health Network enjoys in the areas of cardiology and intensive care medicine. They are equally impressed by the competitive fellowships that our graduates enter. Frequently, our graduates return after fellowship training and join the teaching staff. To me, this is the greatest endorsement of the training program and quality of patient care provided at St. Luke's Hospital & Health Network.”

Application Process

The Goal of the Osteopathic Internal Medicine Residency

Our goal is to train our house staff to develop the competencies to practice in a primary care setting, to practice as a hospitalist or to enter subspecialty training with confidence.

This goal is accomplished through:

  • Excellent one-to-one mentoring by a dedicated cadre of approximately 100 volunteer faculty and eight core faculty
  • Flexible tailoring of rotations to best suit our residents' long term career goals
  • Caring for a diverse socioeconomic population with a wide spectrum of disease processes
  • By providing instruction using interactive conferences, web-based learning and simulation

The Osteopathic Internal Medicine Residency Program at St. Luke's is fully accredited by the Council on Post-Doctoral Training of the American Osteopathic Association. The program also is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Upon successful completion of the program, our residents take both the American College of Osteopathic Internal Medicine Board examination and the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) certifying examination. For those residents interested in fellowships, this allows them to pursue both osteopathic and/or allopathic fellowship training opportunities.

We are proud of our graduates and their accomplishments. Our three-year pass rate on the internal medicine certifying examination is 100 percent. The majority of our residents seeking fellowships have entered into competitive programs. Recently, these graduates have continued training at such institutions as the University of Maryland, Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia, New York University, Vanderbilt University and Wake Forest University. Some of our current teaching faculty are graduates of our program who returned to practice at St. Luke’s after completing their fellowships.

The hospital also actively recruits graduates from our program to join our well-established hospitalist practice. For those interested in primary care, the hospital recruitment department assists residents in locating practice opportunities within the extensive St. Luke's Hospital & Health Network practice sites.

We welcome you to apply to our program. We believe you will find our program provides a first-rate educational experience in a supportive training environment.
