Transitional Year Residency Program

“Many applicants are attracted to our program because of the breadth of clinical experiences, the committed, dedicated faculty and the national reputation St. Luke's Hospital & Health Network enjoys in the areas of cardiology and intensive care medicine. They are equally impressed by the competitive fellowships that our graduates enter. Frequently, our graduates return after fellowship training and join the teaching staff. To me, this is the greatest endorsement of the training program and quality of patient care provided at St. Luke's Hospital & Health Network.”

Application Process

Academic and Clinical Training for Hospitalized and Ambulatory Patients

The goal of the Transitional Year Residency Program at St. Luke’s Hospital & Health Network is to provide an educational program with academic and clinical training in the basic principles of patient care for hospitalized and ambulatory patients. Upon completion, the transitional year resident will have a fundamental knowledge of preventative medicine and health maintenance and an appreciation of common disease entities and their evaluation and treatment. The training is focused on developing the resident's competencies in the areas of medical knowledge, patient care, communication and interpersonal skills, professionalism, practice-based learning and system-based practice.

This program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Our trainees who chose this year are seeking a preparatory year before entering other residency training.

The strengths of the program include:

  • Flexible elective time with a wide choice of clinical experiences
  • Individual tailoring of the resident’s curriculum to suit his/her long-term career goals
  • A strong educational environment with dedicated, qualified faculty
  • The opportunity to interact with residents from other accredited ACGME residencies (Emergency Medicine, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Ob/Gyn, General Surgery)
  • Excellent ambulatory continuity clinic in a managed care setting
  • Opportunity to learn using interactive conferences, web-based learning and simulation

We welcome you to apply to our program. We believe you will find that we have a program that provides a first-rate educational experience in a supportive training environment.

Application Process and Contact Information

  • All applicants from LCME-approved medical schools and international medical graduates must apply through the Electronic Residency Service (ERAS) (aamc.org/audienceeras.htm). The deadline for application is December 15. We sponsor the J-1 visa and the expedited H-1 visa sponsorship.
  • ERAS automatically forwards only five documents from an application: the common application form, the dean’s letter, a transcript, an ECFMG status report and your photo.
  • Other documents that we require, and which MUST BE SPECIFICALLY ASSIGNED BY YOU TO BE TRANSMITTED TO US THROUGH ERAS, include three letters of recommendation, a personal statement, an USMLE transcript and a Curriculum Vita.
  • Once a completed application is received and reviewed, candidates chosen for interviews will be contacted via e-mail. Interviews begin in November.
  • Up to four Transitional Year Residency positions are offered through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). Our NRMP program number is 1605999P0.
