Program of Studies
The educational program extends over a period of 12 months. Students have theoretical instruction and clinical experience in 13 surgical specialty areas.
The curriculum is divided into two, eight-week terms (August to December) and two 15-week terms (January to August). Students receive instruction in medical terminology, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, anesthesia, pharmacology, surgical techniques and professional development. Clinical experiences are provided in the operating room at the Bethlehem and Allentown campuses, cardiac catheterization lab, obstetrical department, sterile processing department and special procedures unit. Basic surgical technology skills and theory are correlated to learning experiences in the clinical laboratory setting. The amount of clinical exposure increases with the advanced courses.
In addition to the certificate program, an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Surgical Technology is available in collaboration with Northampton Community College.
A total of two weeks vacation is given during the 12-month program. The student also receives additional time off for holidays. Interruption of the planned program of studies due to illness will be evaluated on an individual basis.
All clinical experience is provided at St. Luke's Hospital and Health Network. Students are responsible for transportation. The use of a car is necessary.
