Sentinel Lymph Node – A nuclear medicine and surgical procedure that involves injecting dye around a tumor in order to identify a single lymph node at risk for the spread of cancer. This procedure is available to patients with breast, lung and colorectal cancer and melanoma. Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy may reduce the need for major lymph node removal surgery and dramatically increases the accuracy of determining whether a tumor has spread.
Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA) – A surgical technique that transforms high-energy radio signals into intense heat that destroys inoperable liver tumors. The procedure is similar to a microwave oven, heating the tumor from the inside out.
Surgical Insertion of Pumps – The surgical implantation of a pump to direct chemotherapy to the liver. The pump is placed under the skin and connected to the hepatic artery, which supplies liver tumors with their blood supply.
Melanoma Program – A specialized program for the diagnosis and treatment of melanoma, headed by the area's only melanoma physician expert. The latest diagnostic and treatment options include sentinel lymph node biopsy and immunotherapy in the form of vaccines, interferons and High-Dose Interleukin-2 (IL-2).
Comprehensive Breast Care Program – Our physicians are part of this second opinion and educational program available through the St. Luke's Cancer Center. Individuals who are diagnosed with breast cancer or an abnormality may seek answers or a second opinion from the program's multidisciplinary team in a single day. The team of physicians and other medical experts meet in a single location and provide a physical exam, a review of all test results and the diagnosis and a recommendation for treatment or follow up care. See Comprehensive Breast Care Program (pdf) for more information.
Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemoperfusion (HIPEC) - Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemoperfusion (HIPEC) is an advanced treatment only available at select cancer centers nationwide, including St. Luke’s Hospital in Bethlehem, where cancer specialists are treating patients with abdominal cancers and ovarian cancer with both the HIPEC and Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (IPC) methods. HIPEC is done immediately following cancer surgery. During this treatment, chemotherapeutic agents are heated to 108 degrees Fahrenheit and circulated throughout the abdominal cavity for about 90 minutes so that cancerous tissue becomes even more sensitive, improving the effectiveness of the treatment. St. Luke’s Hospital is one of very few centers to offer HIPEC.
Intravenous (IV) and intraperitoneal chemotherapy (IPC) - Intravenous (IV) and intraperitoneal chemotherapy (IPC) options are available to patients with advanced ovarian cancer. Chemotherapy is administered directly to the cancer site with a catheter placed into the abdominal cavity. The catheter may be placed at the time of ovarian cancer-debulking surgery or after surgery as a separate procedure. Performed on an inpatient or outpatient basis, IPC literally bathes cancerous tissue with a powerful solution of cancer-fighting drugs.
Laparoscopic Surgery for Liver Tumors
