Suzanne LaPierre-Roman: The Epitome of Hope

In 2005, specialists tried to chip away at Suzanne's hope — the hope that she would live to see the next Christmas, the hope that she would live to raise her children. She was diagnosed with stage IV melanoma in her gallbladder, a cancer that doctors said would be fatal. “I went to a couple of well-known hospitals,” Suzanne recalls, “but the only treatment I was offered was chemotherapy to buy me a little more time. I knew I couldn't give up and I had to find the right doctor.”

The moment Suzanne walked into Dr. Lee Riley's office, Medical Director of St. Luke's Cancer Center and Chief of Surgical Oncology, she knew that she found the right doctor. “I felt immediately at peace,” she says. Dr. Riley recommended Interleukin-2 (IL-2), a therapy that spurs the body's own defenses to work against cancer cells. “I had a 7% chance for a complete cure - a small chance, but better than no chance at all,” Suzanne says.

In October 2005, she underwent a grueling course of eight treatments in the hospital. “During one of my hospital stays, Dr. Riley came in at midnight to make sure I was okay,” Suzanne recalls. “Another time, I was just feeling lousy, so a nurse came by and rubbed my back. They tried to make it as comfortable as possible. They're all unbelievable — so caring.”

Suzanne is very grateful to the St. Luke's staff, particularly for the care and friendship of her nurses, and of course Dr. Riley, who recently announced that she was cancer free after three years.

When you contribute to St. Luke's, your not-for-profit community hospital, you're giving hope to people like Suzanne, who needed all the hope she could get.
