St. Luke's School of Nursing Celebrates its 125th Anniversary

St. Luke's School of Nursing, the oldest operating diploma nursing school in the country, will be celebrating its 125th Anniversary this year.

Today's nurses fill a huge void being left in our health care institutions as our aging nurse population retires. The school has also developed a partnership with Moravian College for students who wish to graduate with a bachelor's degree in nursing.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, scholarships are available for nursing students in good academic standing or qualified nurses who are working toward an advanced degree that will qualify them to teach at the St. Luke's School of Nursing.

Pay it Forward Endowed Scholarship Fund

Taken from a popular movie, Pay it Forward is a fitting name for the endowed scholarship fund created by a generous donation from a graduate of the St. Luke's Diploma School of Nursing. Graduates who were the recipients of scholarships when they attended St. Luke's can now ‘pay it forward' by contributing to a fund that will be used to provide educational opportunities for deserving students and faculty members affiliated with the St. Luke's School of Nursing.

Fulfilling the Dream to Become a Nurse

Forty-four years ago, St. Luke's School of Nursing graduated a bright, promising student who enjoyed a long and satisfying career in nursing at St. Luke's Hospital. That young woman would not have been able to attend nursing school if not for the financial support she received from The Jane Lovell Scholarship Fund. Her mother died unexpectedly a month before she graduated from high school. The money set aside for nursing school was used for funeral expenses, leaving her to wonder if she would ever be able to afford to go to school.

Thanks to the generosity of Jane Lovell, a School of Nursing graduate who wanted to make sure that deserving individuals could follow their dream of one day becoming a nurse, money was available. The student became the fortunate recipient of Jane's generosity. Today, she is comfortably retired. But she has never forgotten the generosity that was granted her well over three decades ago. She decided to pay back the gift of her education through the Jane Lovell Scholarship Fund. By contributing toward the Pay it Forward Endowment Fund, she is helping students to take the first step in a long and rewarding career in nursing.

Your annual gift of $250, $100 or even $25 in support of the Pay It Forward Endowment Fund will help ensure that we can continue to provide educational opportunities for our nursing students and meet the growing need for nursing professionals.

The gift of your time and energy improves lives. Learn about our volunteer opportunities for adults, students and juniors.
